Monteverdi: Storia di guerra e di pace

Europe of the seventeenth century was marked by continuous armed conflicts, but also of occasional or lasting transitions to peace.  Monteverdi himself depended on some of the key players on the chessboard of European conflicts, and thus war is a continuous reference throughout his output in key works such as the Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi, in various pieces of sacred and secular vocal music, but not least in his great operas Incorronazione di Poppea and Orfeo. Trondheim Barokk presents a selection of such monuments in the world of Monterverdi alongside works by contemporary composers written for the celebration of peace and hope.
